2009 October Foliage Outing
Five Akron Railroad Club members spead out in two teams on Sunday, October 18, to record the action on the CSX Chicago-Pittsburgh mainline. They stayed in touch by cell phone to keep their counterparts advised of what was coming and tried to find some nice fall colors to use as backdrops for the trains.
One team of Richard Thompson, John Puda and Jim Mastromattteo hung around the Akron area and later ventured to Creston and Sterling. The other team of Craig Sanders and Rich Antibus struck out for locations west of Lodi and eventually spent time in the New London and Greenwich areas. Thompson and Puda also spent some time in Newton Falls before returning to Akron.
The day got off to a promising start weather wise with clear skies over Akron. But clouds began rolling in off Lake Erie by mid-morning and soon there were more clouds than sunshine. That remained the situation until mid afternoon when skies in the Greenwich area became mostly clear.
Clouds, though, were not the only problem facing the club members this day. CSX traffic was fairly minimal. After the passage of D750 in late morning to early afternoon, there were no eastbound trains until after dark. The only westbound trains all afternoon was a brace of three trains running nearly on each other’s blocks.
The westerly team of Sanders and Antibus was able to fill the void by catching some trains on the former Big Four route of CSX at New London and Greenwich.
