Still Standing — Barely — in Bellevue

October 31, 2011

A Wheeling & Lake Erie train passes beneath the new signals at the New Haven Connection in Bellevue on Sunday, Oct. 30. The old signals at this location still stand, but are covered with bags.

Norfolk Southern has been busy in recent weeks installing and cutting in a new signal system in Bellevue. Removed in the process have been the Nickel Plate Road color light signals and the Pennsylvania Railroad position light signals that governed train movements here until recently.

However, some Nickel Plate signals still stand, albeit with bags covering their signal heads. Other signals have been removed and were lying on the ground waiting to be picked up.

The changeover has not been without problems. On Sunday, the signals at the Mini Plant and Harkness were not operating, The dispatcher had to give permission over the radio to train crews to pass both points because the signals displayed a stop indication.

The signal heads of the former Pennsylvania Railroad signals that guarded the Sandusky District track at Southwest Street in Bellevue await their fate. More than likely these signals will be scrapped or donated to the Mad River & NKP Railroad Museum.
