Amtrak has announced that its sixth National Train Day will be held on May 11 this year and thus far just one Ohio city has signed on to have activities.
The National Train Day website hosted by Amtrak lists only Cincinnati as planning events. In previous years, Toledo has hosted National Train Day celebrations. The Orrville Railroad Heritage Society has also hosted National Train Day events.
The nearest 2013 National Train Day events to Northeast Ohio will be held in Michigan at Amtrak stations in Ann Arbor, Flint, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Dearborn, East Lansing and Niles.
No details about activities in those cities or in Cincinnati have been released.
Amtrak launched National Train Day in 2008 to educate the public about rail travel and railroad history.
The event is held each year on the Saturday closest to the May 10 anniversary of the driving of the Golden Spike that signified the completion of America’s first transcontinental railroad in 1869.
National Train Day celebrations typically feature passenger cars and other equipment displays as well as information table sponsored by railroad-related organizations. Events are held at Amtrak stations as well as railroad museums.
