Despite yet another delay, officials still hope to make progress this year on building a new Amtrak station in Rochester, N.Y.
Groundbreaking was to happen this spring, but the plans changed and state officials are studying new proposals that a New York Department of Transportation official said should make the station project less costly.
The budget for the project is $25.6 million, and all bids were more than that amount. The current Rochester station was built in 1978 and designed to be temporary. It is not compliant with the federal ADA laws.
Construction of the new facility is estimated to take three years and will feature tunnels for passengers to reach the tracks for boarding trains.
The new station will be designed to accommodate intercity buses, but no funds are available for that work within the current budget.
Rochester is served by eight Amtrak trains a day, which includes four daily Empire Corridor trains between New York City and Niagara Falls, N.Y., the Maple Leaf between New York and Toronto, and the Lake Shore Limited between Chicago and New York
