3rd Parties Sought for Passenger Trains

A third party is being sought to take over the local passenger service that Canadian National now provides on the former Algoma Central between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst, Ontario.

The Algoma Central Railway Passenger Service Working Group recently issued a request for expressions of interest. The responses, which are not binding, are due by Sept. 19.

CN has issued a similar request seeking a third party to operate the Agawa Canyon Train Tour.

The railroad noted that its core business is operating freight trains and said that qualified third party could operate the tour train more effectively.

“Stakeholders, through their own efforts, were successful in working with CN and the Federal Government to keep the [Algoma Central] passenger line operating in the short term, and we’re now focusing on long-term solutions,” says Working Group member Tom Dodds, CEO of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corp.

“If there are any rail companies or other parties that are interested in operating the [Algoma Central] passenger service, we’d like to hear from them. We encourage everyone to get the message out about this unique passenger service opportunity.”

The EOI is available at www.algomapassengerrail.com.
