Super Heroes Coming to Vacant Detroit Depot

It already looks creepy and haunted so the vacant Michigan Central Station in southwest Detroit might be an ideal location to film a movie.

Film crews have been preparing the 18-floor station for filming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Directed by Zack Synder, filming is expected to take place at the station for at least a week.

The film is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2016, and stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Amy Adams plays the role of Lois Lane and Jesse Eisenberg is Lex Luthor.

The Michigan Central station, which opened in 1913, is owned by Manual “Matty” Moroun. A top aide to Moroun said plans are in place to spend $80 million over the next three years to renovate one of Detroit’s best known symbols of urban decay.

The station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, but Amtrak ceased using the building on Jan. 6, 1988, in favor of an adjacent modular structure.

Amtrak later built a station in the New Center that opened on May 4, 1994. That station was supposed to be temporary until an intermodal center could be built across the tracks. That facility has yet to be constructed.

At the time of the Michigan Central Station’s construction, it was considered the tallest rail station in the world.
