BLET Chooses Contractor for HQ Project

Plans continue to move forward for the creation in Independence of a national headquarters for the Brother of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.

The BLET recently announced that it has signed a letter of intent with the Albert M. Higley Company for construction services at the headquarters.

Founded in the early 1860s, the nation’s oldest labor union has been based in downtown Cleveland since the 19th century. Last year, the BLET sold its headquarters building, known as the Standard Building.

Earlier this year the union purchased a building in Independence, a Cleveland suburb that is also the northern terminus of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

Higley, one of four companies to bid on the project, will use only union labor to build out the new facility, said BLET National President Dennis Pierce in a news release.

The BLET expects to move into the new headquarters in spring 2016.
