CSX Sends Its ex-NS SD40-2s Out for Rebuilding

CSX is sending 12 SD40-2 locomotives to Motive Power in Boise, Idaho, to be rebuilt into SD40-3s.

The locomotives were acquired from Norfolk Southern last March in a swap that sent 12 CSX SD80MACs to NS.

Although NS put its ex-CSX locomotives into immediate service, CSX has stored its ex-NS SD40-2s in Huntington, West Virginia.

All of the former NS units have been renumbered into the 8900 series. They also have received the CSX yellow YN3b “boxcar” logo over their basic black shell.

Trains magazine reported on Friday that Nos. 8901-8904, 8906, and 8909 left Huntington in late August for Idaho. Six more, Nos. 8900, 8905, 8907-8908, 8910-8911, left Huntington on Sept. 3.

Once rebuilt into SD30-3s, the units will receive roster numbers in the 4000 series.

CSX has been sending idled SD40-2 locomotives to Motive Power for rebuilding for the past several months.
