AOS Picks up 2-6-2 Kettle Moraine No. 9

A 2-6-2 built in 1901 for California’s McCloud River Railroad is the latest steam locomotive to join the roster of the Age of Steam Roundhouse.

AOS owner Jerry Jacbson has purchased Kettle Moraine No. 9, which also worked for the Yreka Western Railroad, the Amador Central Railroad and the Nez Perce & Idaho Railroad.

Last owned by Steve Butler, it was stored indoors at North Lake, Wisconsin, after its days as an excursion railroad locomotive were ended by NIMBY opposition.

Richard Hinebaugh purchased No. 9 in 1964 and moved it to Mid-Continent Railroad Museum in North Freedom, Wisconsin. There it was rebuilt for tourist train operation, which it began in 1971 on the Kettle Moraine Railroad.

It was later moved to North Lake where real estate development on former farmland led to residents complaining of smoke, noise and traffic in town. The Kettle Moraine last operated on Oct. 28, 2001.

Jacobson, a lifetime member of the Akron Railroad Club, purchased No. 9 this past July.
