At least 18 cars of a Norfolk Southern train detailed late Tuesday in Ripley, New York, bringing rail traffic to a halt on NS and a nearby CSX line.
The derailment occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on the line between Cleveland and Buffalo, New York.
Media reports indicated that about 30 people were evacuated from their homes and local schools were closed on Wednesday.
The precautions were taken because two derailed cars were leaking ethanol while another was carrying propane. The car with propane did not spill any of its contents.
CSX stopped its traffic for a time, but had resumed running trains by Wednesday.
The NS train that derailed was headed eastbound at the time of the derailment.
NS officials said the two crew members aboard the train were not injured and were able to determine that at least one car was leaking ethanol.
Local emergency responders later found two cars were leading ethanol and foam was sprayed on those cars to contain the leak.
