FRA Wants a More Aggressive Approach to Prevent Railroad Grade Crossing Fatalies

A more aggressive approach, including stepping up the use of technology, to preventing grade crossing fatalities is being urged by the Federal Railroad Administration.

FRAThe FRA has asked tech companies to integrate railroad-crossing data into mapping applications and other pertinent technologies as soon as possible.

Railroads are being asked to “take more aggressive steps to report problematic or dangerous crossings to state and local officials.”

FRA Administrator Sarah Feinberg noted that during the past six weeks there have been three significant grade crossing incidents involving fatalities.

“These heartbreaking incidents are in addition to the other 87 people killed and 236 people injured this year at railroad crossings,” she said in a news release.
