FRA Wants Sleep Apnea Screening

The Federal Railroad Administration will issue an advisory to railroads on testing train operators for obstructive sleep apnea.

FRAThe FRA is expected to recommend that railroads begin an interim testing program until it can draft rules that would require railroads to screen train operators for sleep apnea.

FRA Administrator Sarah Feinberg told the Associated Press that that process could take years, but railroads should begin testing immediately.

The federal agency acted after reports that the engineer of a New Jersey Transit train had the condition when his train crashing into the terminal in Hoboken, New Jersey, killing one and injuring 100 others.
