C&O SD40 to be Restored to Original Livery

CSX is donating a former Chesapeake & Ohio SD40 locomotive to the C&O Historical Society.

co-logoAs part of the transaction, CSX will repaint the locomotive into C&O colors and markings.

The C&O society will in turn make the locomotive available for use by the Buckingham Branch Railroad in Virginia, which uses former C&O tracks.

The SD40, No. 7534, was the last unit to wear C&O markings before being repainted into the CSX blue and gold YN3 livery.

Although CSX retired No. 7534 from service, it will restore it so that it can operate again. During its CSX service years it wore roster number 4617.

“We are restoring the engine back to its former C&O paint scheme and making any minor cosmetic repairs that may be necessary,” said Laura Phelps, manager of media relations at CSX.

The restoration will be done at the CSX locomotive shops in Huntington, West Virginia.
