The Circus and its Train Are Coming to an End

A decades-long railroading tradition is about to end.

circus-logoRingling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus said on Saturday it will cease performances after 146 years in business, citing declining tickets sales and high operating costs.

“After much evaluation and deliberation, my family and I have made the difficult business decision that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will hold its final performances in May,” said Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, the Florida-based producer of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey.

Many news accounts reported that ticket sales fell more than expected after Ringling removed elephants from its shows in May 2016.

The last performances for the self-proclaimed Greatest Show on Earth will be held in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 7 and in Uniondale, New York, on May 21.

Aside from Ringling, James E. Strates Shows also has a circus train. Presumably, the show will go on at Strates.
