Sale of Kentucky Short Line Halted for Now

The efforts by an Oregon businessman to buy an historic Kentucky short line railroad have ended for now.

The Big South Fork Scenic Railway said this past week that the McCreary County Heritage Foundation Board, which owns the railroad has broken off negotiations for the sale.

Sam Carpenter of Bend, Oregon, said last month that he expected to purchase the Big South Fork Scenic tourist line and the Kentucky & Tennessee freight-hauling short line from the foundation.

Carpenter said he expected to begin operating trains as soon as April.

The railroad was built in the early 20th century along the Kentucky-Tennessee border. It offered steam-powered excursions trains between 1948 and 1964.
