CSX Resume Using Track at Site of Pennsylvania Derailment

Some residents of Hyndman, Pennsylvania, were allowed to return to their homes over the weekend and rail traffic has resumed through the city where an eastbound freight train derailed last week.

Amtrak’s Capitol Limited resumed operating over its entire route between Chicago and Washington on Sunday. Nos. 29 and 30 had been reduced to operating between Chicago and Pittsburgh.

CSX said it was maintaining a small perimeter around the derailment site to allow the cleanup to continue. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.

Testing conducted last last week showed that neither the derailment of its fires had an adverse effect on air quality.

The train that derailed was the Q388 from Chicago to Selkirk, New York. Thirty-two of its 178 cars derailed, triggering fires that burned for more than 48 hours.
