The American Railway Car Institute Committee of the Railway Supply Institute said last week that rail-car orders in the fourth quarter of 2017 totaled 8,501 units compared with 8,671 units in the third quarter and 4,866 units in the fourth quarter of 2016
Car deliveries in the last quarter of 2017 rose to 13,404 units from 11,015 units in the third quarter. Deliveries for the second quarter and first quarter of 2017 were 10,625 and 10,042 units, respectively.
By comparison deliveries in the last quarter of 2016 were 14,914 units.
At the end of 2017, the rail-car backlog was 58,275 units, a drop from the backlog of 64,253 units on Oct. 1, 2017; 66,561 on July 1, 2017; and 60,471 on April 1, 2017.
