C&O 2716 Begins 3-Day Trip Today in Kentucky

A former Chesapeake & Ohio steam locomotive will begin a three-day journey today from one Kentucky museum to another.

Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation, CSX, and R.J. Corman Railroad Group will move C&O 2-8-4 Kanawha No. 2716 from the Kentucky Railway Museum at New Haven to a planned heritage center at CSX’s former Ravenna Yard at Irvine.

Along the way No. 2718 will make a guest appearance at a street festival in Midway and be honored in Lexington with a new craft brewed beer.

The journey is slated to commence at 10 a.m today when the 2716 and an excursion train is towed by former Clinchfield Railroad EMD F7 No. 800 to the KRMs connection with CSX at Lebanon Junction.

At Lebanon Junction, some cars will be cut off and return to the museum while the 2716 and its train continues on the CSX Main Line Subdivision to Louisville where it will connect with R.J. Corman and travel via the former C&O Old Road Subdivision to Frankfort.

The 2716 will be displayed outside the Old Capital Building from 6:30 to 9 p.m. today.

On Saturday, 2716 will arrive at Midway at 9:45 a.m. and the 2716 will be on display.

It will depart Midway at 1:15 p.m. and arrive at Manchester Street in Lexington 75 minutes later where there will be a three-hour event celebrating a new beer brewed in the locomotive’s honor, the “Back on Track Steam Beer.”

On Sunday, No. 2716 will depart Lexington for Winchester  at 9:15 a.m. to be interchanged with CSX at 11 a.m. before departing for Ravenna.

The 2716 is expected to arrive at Veterans Memorial Park in Ravenna at 3:30 p.m. and be on display until 5 p.m.
