Steamtown National Historic Site said this week that it has taken delivery of a new firebox that will be installed in Boston & Maine 4-6-2 No. 3713.
The firebox was built by the Strasburg Rail Road for about $148,600. It took a year to construct.
The National Park Service said restoration of No. 3713 to operating condition will cost $1.5 million.
Half of that funding is coming from the federal government and the other half is being raised by Project 3713, a nonprofit support group.
When the 3713 will be able operate will hinge on funding and staffing.
No. 3713 was one of five Pacific-type locomotives built in 1934 for the B&M by Lima for passenger service.
Retired 1956, the 3713 was purchased by F. Nelson Blount for his Steamtown collection.
