Leslie Richards, the secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, has been named the new general manager of Philadelphia’s public transit operator.
Richards will assume her new post at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority in January following the retirement of current GM Jeffrey Knueppel.
She previously served on SEPTA’s board and has served as the head of PennDOT since 2015.
At SEPTA, Richards will oversee 9,500 employees at the nation’s sixth largest transit agency with 1 million riders per week.
In a news release announcing Richards’ appointment, SEPTA noted that she has extensive experience in the strategic planning and management of transportation projects in her private sector work over the past two decades, as well as her work in state and local government.
Knueppel has worked at SEPTA for three decades and has served as GM since 2015. He will retire on Dec. 31.
