FTA Grants Target Public Transit in Poor Communities

Federal grants are being made available by the Federal Transit Administration to improve transit service in areas experiencing long-term economic distress.

FTA said it has launched a competitive grant program with $8.5 million known as Helping Obtain Prosperity for Everyone.

The grants can be used to support planning, engineering and technical studies or financial planning to improve transit services.

This could include new transit routes and facilities, or innovative technologies in communities experiencing persistent poverty.

FTA said the grants can be used to support coordinated human service transportation planning to improve transit service or provide new services such as rides to opioid abuse recovery and treatment.

Eligible applicants must come from counties with more than 20 percent of the population living in poverty for 30 years or more, as measured by the U.S. Census, or the 2013-2017 American Community Survey.

Many of these communities are in rural areas. Applicants are encouraged to partner with nonprofit organizations engaged in public transportation and anti-poverty issues.

Grant applications are being accepted through May 4.
