NS, CSX To Take it Slow in Returning to Offices

Norfolk Southern and CSX have indicated that as some states have begun to ease social distancing orders that led to widespread business closures, they are in no rush to return employees back to their offices.

A CSX spokesman told Trains magazine that it is still evaluating the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As the national conversation turns toward incremental reopening of the economy, we are prepared to respond when traffic volumes begin to recover and stay-at-home orders begin to ease,” the spokesman said.

“Although most of our employees have been able to report to work as usual, we are carefully developing plans to reopen our offices. As government regulations allow, we will take a measured approach to reopening while ensuring the safety of our employees. Our pandemic response task force is constantly monitoring the situation and will oversee the process as it unfolds across our system.”

CSX is headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, and dispatches all of its trains from there.

It has established satellite dispatching offices around Jacksonville should the need arrive to spread out dispatchers.

NS continues to be based in Norfolk, Virginia, but has moved some offices to Atlanta as part of the transition to making that city its headquarters.

That included a centralized dispatching office that opened in 2018.

The railroad has said it will continue to follow recommendations from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
