VIA Rail Canada will require its passengers to wear masks effective June 23.
The rule announced by the passenger carrier requires mask wearing during a trip except when passengers are eating or drinking, and whenever appropriate distancing cannot be maintained in stations and when boarding.
VIA attributed the move to rising ridership “as the economy is gradually reopening.”
It described the rule as being implemented for the safety and well-being employees and passengers.
Although Canada’s Minister of Transport had recommended mask wearing back in April, VIA has thus far been reluctant to do that.
