EL Monday: Relic of the Dereco Era

On March 1, 1968, the Erie Lackawanna was reorganized as the Erie Lackawanna Railway, a unit of the Dereco Corporation, which was a holding company established by Norfolk & Western to acquire the EL.

That led to sightings such as this showing N&W motive power pulling an EL intermodal train in Kent.

Dereco also operated the Delaware & Hudson. At the time, N&W was seeking to merge with the Chesapeake & Ohio, but that marriage was never completed.

By establishing Dereco, N&W could hold the EL at arm’s length.
