Cleveland Short Line Gets ORDC Grant

The Ohio Rail Development Commission has awarded a grant worth up to $300,000 to repair a culvert near Solon located on the Cleveland & Cuyahoga Railway.

The grant will be used to repair a stone arch culvert on the Mahong Subdivision so the railroad can continue serving a Nestle plant in Solon. The grant involves a 50-50 match.

The project became needed in June after an embankment adjacent to the culvert failed. The C&C undertook emergency repairs to get the rail line back in service.

That work involved stabilizing the culvert but additional repair work is needed to keep the rail line in service, C&C officials said in a news release issued by ORDC.

Railroad officials said the grant will enable it to afford the repair costs.

ORDC also announced that it was awarding $80,000 to food packaging company Huhtamaki to help pay for repairs to two crossings at the company’s plant in New Vienna, Ohio.

Huhtamaki said it is investing $9 million in construction, machinery, equipment and related costs at its plant and the ORDC grant will be used toward repairing rail infrastructure at the plant.

A condition of the grant was that Huhtamaki committed to creating 30 new jobs and retaining 226 existing jobs in New Vienna.

An ORDC news release said Huhtamaki officials receives plastic resin by rail that is uses in the manufacturing of consumer goods.
