The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad said it has been installing Hotstart devices on its locomotives in prepare for winter operations.
The device uses a heater/pump combination to circulate hot water through the locomotive engine.
Otherwise, the locomotives would have to run continuously in order to prevent water-cooled diesel power plants from freezing.
CVSR officials said the device has reduced engine idling time by 18 hours a day per locomotive.
In other CVSR news, the railroad is holding a photo competition for passengers riding its Polar Express trains.
Those who take selfie photographs of themselves wearing a holiday themed costume may win a holiday cheer gift bag valued at $175.
The costumes must be festive and family friendly, and cannot feature licensed characters.
Passengers making the photographs must also be wearing a facial mask in their image, which can be made aboard the train, or in front of a train.
Photographs must be posted on social media with the hashtag #CVSRElfie.
The CVSR is also urging members of the public to show up in Peninsula on Nov. 11 to pay tribute to the nation’s veterans.
The railroad is running a train for veterans on that day and it is expected to pass through Peninsula between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Those present are asked to show support and appreciation for veterans as the train passes by.
