Cleveland Cliffs Wants to Acquire 6 Short Lines

Cleveland-Cliffs told the U.S. Surface Transportation Board that it plans to acquire control of six short lines owned by ArcelorMittal.

The Cleveland-based mining company said the railroads include Brandywine Valley Railroad; Steelton & Highspire Railroad; Lake Michigan & Indiana Railroad; Upper Merion & Plymouth Railroad; Cleveland Works Railway; and South Chicago & Indiana Harbor Railway.

Cleveland-Cliffs said in a news release that its acquisitions of Arcelor Mittal for $1.4 billion will make it the largest flat-rolled steel producer in North America with combined shipments of 17 million net tons in 2019.

The company will also be the largest iron ore pellet producer in North America with 28 million long tons of annual capacity.

Cleveland-Cliffs now owns one short line, the Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad in Michigan.
