Rail Traffic Down 1.4% Last Week

For the week ending Dec. 5, the Association of American Railroads said U.S. railroads handled 244,986 carloads, which was 1.4 percent below the same week in 2019.

Overall traffic was 542,203 carloads and intermodal units, a 4.8 percent increase over the 2019 figure.

Containers and trailer volume was containers and trailers moved, an increase of 10.5 percent over 2019.

For the year to date, total traffic is 8.1 percent below 2019, with intermodal traffic down 2.9 percent and carload traffic down 13.6 percent.

Only grain is ahead of 2019 totals for the same period in 2019, posting a 3 percent increase.
