NS to Furlough Mechanical Department Workers

Although it has declined to release details, Norfolk Southern plans to furlough an unspecified number of its mechanical department employees.

The company issued a statement that acknowledged the furloughs but didn’t say how many people would lose their jobs or which facilities would be affected.

The statement said those affected would be given the opportunity to apply for positions elsewhere on the NS system.

A news report by a Roanoke, Virginia, television station said the furloughs are expected to occur at multiple locations.

NS has been reducing its workforce in recent year with furloughs having been implemented in January 2020, September 2019 and April 2019.

The NS statement hinted that economic conditions prompted the job cuts but was not specific about those.
