WMSR officials said they expect the locomotive to operate this summer although they also indicated that the restoration is project still has a few steps to go to completion.

The railroad is awaiting the arrival of a few parts and workers must address “a few leaks” before the 1309 can receive its Federal Railroad Administration inspection.

“Before the FRA comes out to inspect it, we want to make sure we are 100 percent confident it will pass,” said WMSR chief mechanic Nathaniel Watts at the railroad’s monthly board meeting,

In an unrelated development, the WMSR has leased for summer tourist train operations a Budd dome car that was built in 1955 for the Great Northern Railway.
