Locomotive Production Halts in La Grange

Locomotive assembly has halted at a Chicago area factory that had been building engines since the 1930s.Progress Rail has closed its engine facility in La Grange, Illinois, and will concentrate locomotive building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Electrical locker manufacturing and assembly will be focused in Muncie, Indiana, while other work will go to outside suppliers.

The former Electro Motive Corporation broke ground for the La Grange plant in 1935.

Progress had said in 2018 that it intended to close the La Grange facility. However, it said it will continue to base engineering and administrative support roles in La Grange.

In a statement, Progress Rail, which is  owned by Caterpillar Company, cited a desire to gain efficiencies by consolidating operations at other facilities.
