Class 1 Employment Up Slightly in December

Employment at U.S. Class 1 railroads was up slightly in mid December to 114,499, an 0.48 percent increase over mid-November’s figures.

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board said the December figure was down 2.78 percent compared with December 2020 data.

Five of six workforce categories posted gains in December compared with November.

They were transportation (train and engine) employees, up 1.35 percent to 47,611 workers; transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.75 percent to 4,684; maintenance of equipment and stores, up 0.64 percent to 17,341; professional and administrative, up 0.53 percent to 9,809; and executives, officials and staff assistants, up 0.03 percent to 7,283.

Seeing declines were maintenance of way and structures, down 1.03 percent to 27,771 workers.

On a year-over-year comparison, all but one category saw losses. This included maintenance of equipment and stores, down 6.88 percent; professional and administrative, down 4.05 percent; transportation (train and engine), down 2.97 percent; transportation (other than train and engine), down 2.88 percent; and executives, officials and staff assistants, down 0.4 percent.

Maintenance of way and structures registered a year-over-year increase of 0.18 percent.
