Norfolk Southern said on Monday that it is launching a revamped carbon calculator that will enable shippers to measure carbon emissions in their supply chain decisions.
In a news release, the railroad said the calculator helps to determine the entire cycle of fuel usage by applying direct fuel consumption from locomotives to every rail car based on weight and distance traveled.
Additional fuel use is accounted for to include yard and local operations, equipment repositioning and fuel expended while handling containers in intermodal operations.
NS said the calculator generates a rail fuel efficiency factor for 18 rail-car types and 30 commodities.
It provides data on estimated and avoided emissions, carbon dollars saved, highway miles avoided and trucks and cars taken off the road.
The news release said NS first created a carbon calculator in 2008.
