The value of freight crossing the U.S. border was up 22.6 percent in September the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported. The comparison was to the same month in 2021.
BTS statistics show freight between the U.S. and Canada was $66.5 billion, up 22.3 percent from September 2021, with rail making up $9.2 billion of the total freight moved.
Freight between the U.S. and Mexico totaled $67.4 billion, up 23.0 percent from September 2022, with rail making up $7.7 billion of the total.
Railroads moved $16.9 billion of freight, up 14.9 percent compared to September 2021.
The top three rail ports between U.S. and Canada include Port Huron, Michigan; Detroit; and International Falls, Minnesottal.
The top three rail ports between the U.S. and Mexico were Laredo, Texas; Eagle Pass, Texas; and Nogales, Arizona.
The top three commodities moving across the border were vehicles/parts ($3.7 billion), computers/parts ($0.6 billion) and beverages ($0.4 billion).
BTS said trucks moved $81.9 billion of freight, up 19.4 percent compared to the same month last year.
