Conrail Favorites From an Eastern Tour

September 27, 2020

During my July 1993 eastern railfanning tour with Marty Surdyk, we caught Conrail trains in a number of places including New York State and Pennsylvania.

Here are a few of my favorite images of the Conrail trains that I made during that tour.

The top photograph was made on the West Shore Line, a former New York Central property, and shows a southbound (railroad timetable eastbound) crossing Popolopen Creek.

I was standing on the Bear Mountain Bridge when I made the image.

In the next image, a northbound (timetable westbound) crosses Popolopen Creek.

The next two images were made in downtown Altoona, Pennsylvania, on the former Pennsylvania Railroad mainline.

The series concludes with an image made at the famed Horseshoe Curve.

PC Heritage Unit in Altoona

March 20, 2018

Todd Dillon writes that he took a trip to Pennsylvania last weekend and managed to catch the Penn Central heritage locomotive leading Norfolk Southern train 20W at Alto tower in Altoona.

Yesterday on this site we had a PC train being led by New York Central locomotives. Today we feature an NS train with a PC lookalike unit.

One of these days we’ll feature an actual PC train with an actual PC locomotive.

Ed’s Trip to Pennsylvania (Part 3)

September 23, 2017

Sunday morning found us back in downtown Altoona, Pennsylvania, to get a few more images of Norfolk Southern and Amtrak’s Pennsylvanian as they passed Alto Tower.

We ate breakfast and attended church that morning and also made a visit to the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum.

At the museum we saw the ex-Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 and the Pennsy K4 1361 before heading home to Ohio.
