Amtrak Begins New Thruway in Pennsylvania

Amtrak has launched a new Thruway service in Pennsylvania linking Philadelphia with Reading and Pottstown.

The twice daily service is being operated by Krapf Coaches under a service agreement with Amtrak.

It is being sponsored in part by the South Central Transit Authority in Reading and the Pottstown Area Economic Development agency.

Amtrak Eyes Philadelphia-Reading Thruway Bus

Amtrak may institute a Thruway express bus service from Philadelphia to the Pennsylvania cities of Reading and Pottstown.

The passenger carrier said the bus could be a precursor to establishing passenger rail service between Philadelphia and Reading. The proposed rail service is currently in the early stages of the planning process.

An Amtrak spokesman said the company is seeking a partner to provide the bus service. The spokesman issued a statement that said train service between Philadelphia and Reading will not be determined by bus ridership.

Northern NY Gets New Amtrak Thruway Service

Amtrak has established a new Thruway bus route in New York State to connect with the Lake Shore Limited, Maple Leaf and Empire Service trains.

The route, operated in partnership with Trailways of New York, will stop at Amtrak stations in Rochester, Syracuse, Utica and Saratoga Springs.

Off line cities to be served by the bus include Cooperstown, Cortland, Ithaca, Glens Falls, Lake George and Oneonta.

“As Northern New York continues to grow as a popular place to visit and live, partnering with Trailways of New York helps Amtrak customers travel where they want to go, even after they step off a train,” said Adam Krom, Director of Transportation Connectivity at Amtrak in a statement.

Amtrak Adds Thruway Bus Route in Pennsylvania

Amtrak has added a Thruway Bus link in northeast Pennsylvania to 30th Street station in Philadelphia.

Martz Trailways will serve passengers originating at or bound for Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and White Haven.

Amtrak said the daily bus trips will provide connections to and from Northeast Regional, Acela Express, and Keystone Service as well as the PennsylvanianCrescent and Silver Star.

Amtrak Adding Thruways in Indiana, Ohio

Amtrak has announced that it is adding Thruway bus service to connect with and supplement its Cardinal and Hoosier State trains between Chicago and Indianapolis.

The new bus routes will connect with Amtrak in Indianapolis and Chicago and serve Gary, Ind.; Cincinnati; Louisville, Ky.; and Nashville, Tenn. Amtrak said passengers will have the option of traveling between Indianapolis and points north to Chicago will have the option of riding the train in one direction and returning by bus.

The new Thruway bus services is an extension of ticketing previously done by Amtrak between Chicago and Louisville via Indianapolis.

Columbus Gets Amtrak Thruway Service

Amtrak has reinstated Thruway bus service between Pittsburgh and Columbus. The bus departs Columbus at 1:10 a.m. and connects with the eastbound Capitol Limited and Pennsylvanian. The bus is scheduled to arrive in Pittsburgh at 4:35 a.m.

The westbound bus departs Pittsburgh at 2 a.m. and offers connections from both the Pennsylvanian and the Capitol Limited. However, the connection from the Pennsylvanian is a long one of six hours.

Tickets can be purchased at, but the online timetables and maps do not yet include the new service.

Greyhound operates the bus, which will use the Columbus Greyhound Station. In Pittsburgh, passengers must walk across Liberty Avenue between the Pittsburgh Amtrak and Greyhound stations to make connections to their trains.
