Bellefonte HRS Cancels Fall, Holiday Trains

September 12, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken down another holiday train.

The Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society of Pennsylvania said this week it has cancelled its fall foliage and Santa Express trains due to pandemic-related safety concerns.

The group said on its Facebook page that it made every attempt to run the excursions, “but the presence of a large number of people in a confined space was deemed too risky by BHRS volunteers, our railroad partners, and the state government.”

RDC Car in Pennsylvania Sent For Rehab

December 19, 2014

A Rail Diesel Car owned by the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society in Pennsylvania was moved this week by truck to Columbia, Pa., where it will be restored.

The former Boston & Maine RDC was lifted by a crane from its wheels and placed on highway wheels. The rail trucks and wheels were placed on a flat bed truck.

The refurbished car is expected to return to Bellefonte next summer by rail and under its own power.

Budd built No. 9167 as New York, New Haven & Hartford No. 40. It was assigned to commuter service in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

The car was acquired by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation from Penn Central in 1975 for commuter service in the Philadelphia area and renumbered 9167.

RDC Restoration Underway in Pennsylvania

December 11, 2014

Work has begun to restore to operating condition a Budd Rail Diesel Car 9167 owned by the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society in central Pennsylvania.

The group hopes to have the RDC back in operation by late 2015. It has taken three years for the organization to line up funding for the project.

Rail Mechanical Services Inc. of Columbia, Pa., will perform the heavy mechanical and body restoration work with other work being done by volunteers.

The Bellefonte group currently offers two large excursions each year in the fall and in December. The return of the RDC will enable it to offer additional outings throughout the year.

The Budd Co. built No. 9167 as New York, New Haven & Hartford car No. 40, which operated in commuter service in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.

The car was acquired by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation from Penn Central in 1975, renumbered to 9167 and placed in commuter service in Philadelphia.

Placed in storage in 1983, the 9167 was moved to the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in 1984 when then transferred it to the Bellefonte group.

No. 9167 is one of six RDCs in Pennsylvania. Once restored it will be one of two in operation.
