NORM’s Final 2019 Operating Day is Oct. 12

The Northern Ohio Railway Museum will be offering streetcar rides one last time this year on Oct. 12 starting at 10 a.m.

It will be the final operating day of the season for former Cleveland Railway center-entrance car No. 12, which was built in 1914 by the G.C. Kuhlman Company.

Tickets are $2 and can be purchased in the former Pennsylvania Railroad boxcar inside Carbarn No. 2.

You might see a familiar face leading tours of the museum that day, Blaine Hayes.

He reports that the museum how has a fully operating substation that is supplied by First Energy.

36th Hoosier Traction Meet This Weekend

The 36th annual Hoosier Traction Meet is being held Sept. 6 and 7 in Indianapolis.

The event featured programs about mass transit and electrified railways past and present as well as a railroadiana show.

This year’s meet is being held at the Waterfront Hotel. Tickets are $40 for both days or $25 for a single day session.

There is no charge to attend the railroadiana show.

Among the presenters is Blaine Hayes of Cleveland who will present a program titled Cleveland-Pittsburgh Suburban Rail Service.

It will cover the New York Central’s Beeliner service from Cleveland and the Baltimore & Ohio’s commuter trains to McKeesport.

Other presenters include William Shapotkin, Streetcars of Waukegan, Illinois/Metra-Gulf Mobile & Ohio Chicago-Joliet Service; Richard Aaron, Metra/Illinois Central Electric; David Wilson, Seattle/Tacoma/Portland Light Rail; John Nicholson, The Events of June 21-28, 1958 in Chicago and Granite City, Illinois, Transit; George Chiasson, Boston’s Green Line; George Gula, The Trolley Subway of Philadelphia; Charles Bogart, Current Transit Industry News (Eastern United States and Canada); Tom McNamara, Cincinnati Street Railway/CNC Green Line/Cincinnati & Lake Erie; and Ken Schramm, Busing Around Old Detroit.

Hayes to Present at Hoosier Traction Meet

Former Akron Railroad Club member Blaine Hayes will be among the presenters at the 34th annual Hoosier Traction Meet on Sept. 8-9 in Indianapolis.

Hayes will present a program titled Cleveland Trackless Trolleys.

The event is being held at the Clarion Hotel, 2930 Waterfront Parkway West Drive.

This year’s event will feature free exhibits that will be open on Friday from noon to 10 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Exhibitors will on display items illustrating the principles and nature of mass transportation systems: photos, books, miniature models, timetables and other collectibles.

The presentations will be given in a 150-seat auditorium with audio-visual presentations of live narration and photographs.

Sessions are expected to run from an hour to an hour and a half with 20 to 30 minute breaks between sessions.

Tickets for the presentations are $40 at the door or $19.50 if purchased before August 25.
