Night Photo Shoot on the Buffalo Southern

October 25, 2021

After seeing the article about the 2010 night photography outing with Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 at Fitzwater, it prompted me to look up my early attempts at night photography.

I found several sessions from 1984. When Dan Pluta still lived in the area, I teamed up with him, Marty Surdyk, Robert Surdyk and John Surdyk for one of those night photo shoots.

The May 26, 1984, event was arranged by Dan. At this time the RS3 that was previously on the Adirondack was operating on the Buffalo Southern (ex-Erie) out of Hamburg, New York.

We rode it six miles down to Eden to conduct our makeshift night photos using existing light and flashlights.

For a first time the results were pretty good. It’s hard to say which outing was a favorite. This and others to follow over the next week or two are probably all favorites.

Buffalo Southern Restores C424 to Operating Condition

July 24, 2019

Buffalo Southern has restored a C424M to operating condition and hopes to have it in revenue service soon.

No. 4212, which was built for Canadian Pacific by Montreal Locomotive Works, has been tested in recent weeks on a charter excursion and a freight train.

“I still have some minor electrical issues but she is good to go,” said Pat Connors, the railroad’s chief mechanical officer.

Once the 4212 goes back into service it will retain its faded CP livery until it can be repainted.

The Buffalo Southern shop in Hamburg, New York, is known for a deadline of Alco and MLW units that have been sitting there for 20 years.

The railroad acquired the 4212 and two other units from the Quebec Gatineau railroad in 2000 for a possible traffic increase.

It moved under its own power for the first time in summer 2018 and additional work was done on it over the winter.

Excursion to Cover Ex-Erie Branch Line

November 4, 2016

The Buffalo, Cattaraugus & Jamestown Scenic Railroad is offering rare mileage excursions on Nov. 12 and 12 over a former Erie Railroad/Erie-Lackawanna branch line in New York state.

EL LogoThe four-hour excursions will depart from Hamburg and travel to South Buffalo, using an Alco locomotive operated by the Buffalo Southern Railroad.

Passenger equipment will be two 1930s-era passenger cars and an open-air car.

The ex-Erie line being traveled was once a branch that handled traffic out of Buffalo to the Chicago-New York mainline via Jamestown, New York.

Scheduled passenger service last ran on the branch in 1955, being provided by a diesel-electric doodlebug in 1955.

Although the line is mostly intact, it is out of service where it connects with the ex-Erie mainline that is now operated by the Western New York & Pennsylvania.
