One Day in Wellsboro

August 23, 2021

A couple weeks ago I made a trip to Chicago for the weekend. On the way I stopped at Wellsboro, Indiana, and caught the Chesepeake & Indiana switching the local grain elevator.

It so happens that one of the engines was the 818, which was just donated to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum

Also was SD18 813 still in Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range paint. This and another similar unit have been sold to another short line as they have been deemed surplus.

Indiana Museum to Receive 6-Axle Locomotive

August 19, 2021

A former SD9 locomotive is being donated to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum by the Chesapeake & Indiana.

The locomotive is a rebuilt former Elgin, Joliet & Eastern unit that was built in 1959 for the Duluth, Missable & Iron Range as No. 192.

The SD9 was rebuilt by the DM&IR in 1990, with its original 567 prime mover replaced by a 645 engine.

It was given model designation SD-M and roster number. 318. The EJ&E acquired the unit in 1998 and gave it roster number 818.

The C&I plans to continue using the locomotive until it is ready to be delivered to the museum.

C&I this summer deemed the 818 to be surplus. It will be the North Judson, Indiana, museum’s first EJ&E diesel and its first six-axle unit.

Indiana Rail Museum Leases 5 Miles of Track

August 18, 2021

Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum will continue to lease five miles of track between North Judson and English Lake in Indiana.

The North Judson-based museum signed the agreement with Chesapeake & Indiana Railroad, which operates freight service over the former Chesapeake & Ohio route.

C&I owner Midwest & Bluegrass Rail purchased the line last year from the Town of North Judson although it had operated over the route for several years.

The contract gives the museum greater flexibility in using the track by simplifying operational protocols.

The museum will be responsible for track maintenance on the leased section, while the short line will retain the right to serve freight customers.

North Judson Completes Rail Line Sale

May 6, 2021

An Indiana city has completed the sale of a short line railroad to Midwest & Bluegrass Rail.

The short line hold company purchased the 33-mile line, which North Judson had owned for 17 years.

The town had purchased the former Chesapeake & Ohio line years earlier when CSX sought to abandon it.

The town council and redevelopment commission approved creation of a redevelopment commission fund to handle the money resulting from the sale.

M&B subsidiary Cheaspeake & Indiana was already the line’s freight operator. A tourist train operation also uses a portion of the line

The winning bid of $2.725 million was the highest of three submitted.

3 Vye to Buy Indiana Short Line

January 7, 2021

Three companies are seeking to buy an Indiana short line railroad owned by the city of North Judson.

One of the bidders, Midwest & Bluegrass Rail, has offered $2,725,000 for the 33-mile rail line, which also is used by the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum.

M&B already operates the line as part of its acquisition of the Chesapeake & Indiana, one of four short lines it acquired in 2020.

Other bidders are only interested in the portion of the line used for freight traffic.

They include $2.3 million from agricultural co-op Co-Alliance and $1.6 million from Columbia Rail, which operates three short lines and rail terminal services at two sites in Washington state.

The town’s redevelopment commission is expected to the bids at a closed-door meeting next week.

Ohio, Indiana Short Line Railroad Sold

September 9, 2020

Two Ohio and Indiana short line railroads have been acquired by Midwest & Blue Grass Rail.

The Ohio railroads include the Camp Chase Railway, which operates 15 miles of track in the Columbus area, and the Youngstown & Southeastern, which operates 40 miles of track near Youngstown.

The Indiana short lines included the Cheaspeake & Indiana Railroad (28 miles in northwest Indiana) and the Vermillion Valley Railroad, a 6-mile line between Danville, Illinois, and Olin, Indiana.

All four properties were acquired from Indiana Boxcar Corporation, which said in a statement that it planned to focus on its freight car and locomotive leasing business.

The short lines haul a range of commodities, including agricultural products, fertilizer, recyclables and construction-related materials.

Founded in 2019, M&BG has offices in Lexington, Kentucky, and Kansas City.

In a news release, M&BG described itself as a full-service rail company seeking to acquire, market and development railroads. It also provides trans-loading services.

Indiana Short Line to Rebuild Infrastucture

September 27, 2018

An Indiana short-line railroad has received a $300,000 matching grant that will be used to repair track and bridges.

The Chesapeake & Indiana received the funding from the Indiana Industrial Rail Service Fund.

The railroad will kick in $300,000 of its own money to replace 4,800 ties, and to replace two timber bridges with culverts.

Also planned is the creation of a siding at Thomaston to facilitate interchange with Norfolk Southern.

The 33-mile C&I serves La Porte, Porter, and Starke counties in northwest Indiana. Its largest shipper is Co-Alliance, which is also the state’s largest grain dealer.

In a news release, the railroad said shippers “continue to increase their rail usage with Co-Alliance at Union Mills and Malden handling more grain and fertilizer.”

The railroad has generated some new gypsum traffic for Georgia Pacific at Wheatfield that is transloaded from or rail to truck at a Whitcomb Trucking Facility east of LaCrosse.

The C&I is owned by Indiana Boxcar Company.

Indiana Short Line Gives Diesel a ‘Southern’ Look

May 22, 2018

Indiana Boxcar Corporation is giving one of its member railroads a Southern Railway look.

Former Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railroad SDM No. 815 was repainted by the Olin Locomotive Shops in West Central Indiana.

It will be assigned to the Chesapeake & Indiana Railroad, which has a former Southern unit,, GP38-2 No. 5115.

The latter was acquired during a Norfolk Southern equipment auction in August 2017.

The C&I is a 33-mile long Class III short line located in Northwest Indiana and based in LaCrosse.

It uses former C&O of Indiana tracks and primarily hauls grain that it interchanges with NS and CSX.

No. 815 had been out of service for several months while being rebuilt. The work included overhauling its prime mover, and main and auxiliary generator.

The latest addition to the collection of the Lake Shore Railway Museum in North East, Pennsylvania, arrived late last week and was the star of the night at the museum event on Saturday.

Chesapeake & Ohio B30-7 No. 8272 was built at the nearby GE Erie locomotive assembly plant in Lawrence Park and has been retired by CSX.

CSX also agreed to have the unit repainted into Chessie System colors at its locomotive shop in Huntington, West Virginia.

After being displayed at the GE Erie plant in a private showing, the unit was moved to the museum where it joins a collection of locomotives built in Erie.

Lake State to Operate Indiana Short Line

July 27, 2016

Lake State Railway will operate a former Chesapeake & Ohio line in North Judson, Indiana, that is also used by a tourist train operation.

Lake StateThe city’s town council recently voted to lease the track to LSR and negotiations are being conducted to allow the Hoosier Valley Railroad to have access to the track.

Those negotiations are expected to be completed by the middle of August.

The line had previously been operated by the Chesapeake & Indiana Railroad.

Earlier this year, the Hoosier Valley had curtailed its operations due to what it described on its website as a legal dispute over control of the rail line.

The route is a portion of the former C&O of Indiana, which extended from Chicago to Cincinnati.

CSX abandoned most of the route and portions of it have been converted to a hiking and biking trail that is named after Amtrak’s Cardinal, which once traveled the route.
