As Conrail GP40-2 No. 3353 works in the small yard across from the old ex-Pennsylvania Railroad station in Alliance, a westbound intermodal train led by LMS C40-8W No. 710 passes on the Fort Wayne Line on Oct. 19, 1996.
The 3353 was built in March 1979 while No. 710 dates to October 1994. Locomotive Management Services was jointly owned by Conrail and General Electric and provided motive power to railroads, notably Conrail, Union Pacific and Canadian National, that needed additional locomotives to meet their service needs.
Conrail SD40 No. 6352 is eastbound in Alliance in November 1988. This unit was built for Penn Central and had to be repaired after sustaining damage to his fuel tanks during an accident.
I only visited Alliance during the Conrail era once. That came on May 23, 1998, when I was with Dan Davidson. We spent much of our time there that day photographing the westbound signal bridge at the east end of the interlocking plant. At the time, it still had Pennsylvania Railroad position light signals. Both trains shown above are headed eastward on the Fort Wayne Line. Since then I’ve visited Alliance numerous times in the Norfolk Southern era.
Conrail B36-7 No. 5005 leads an eastbound trailer train in Alliance, on March 5, 1988. Built by GE in November 1983, the 5005 wound up on the CSX motive power roster after the Conrail breakup in 1999.
Conrail C40-8W No. 6069 leads an eastbound intermodal train through Alliance in the fall of 1998. The train is on the connection from the Cleveland Line to the Fort Wayne Line and this is the classic Alliance view of an eastbound taking this well-traveled path. Today these tracks are owned by Norfolk Southern and the major of eastbounds coming into town on the Cleveland Line use this same connection.
The photographer is standing on the Amtrak boarding platform in Alliance to capture Conrail SD60M No. 5548 leading an eastbound in Alliance on Oct. 19, 1996. On the other track is a westbound intermodal train. Both trains are on the Fort Wayne Line.
Conrail B36-7 No. 5052 is eastbound in Alliance in early 1989. The intermodal train is on the Fort Wayne Line and is crossing the Cleveland Line that continues beyond Alliance south to Bayard.
It is August 1998 in Alliance. Conrail C40-8W No. 6208 is curving east off the Cleveland Line to head to Conway Yard in Pennsylvania via the Fort Wayne Line. The train is passing two helpers waiting in the small former Pennsylvania Railroad yard in Alliance.
Conrail B36-7 No. 5019 is rolling a westbound intermodal train through Alliance in June 1986. The unit was built for Conrail in November 1983 and would for a time join the Norfolk Southern motive power roster before finding duties working for two foreign railroads.
