2021 Dates Set for W.Va. Excursion Train

The sponsors of the New River train in West Virginia have announced that its 2021 dates of operation.

The Autumn Colors Express between Huntington and Hinton has been canceled for this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rail Excursion Management Company said the 2021 trips will operate Oct. 21-24.

The trains will made an intermediate stop in Charleston.

W.Va. Fall Excursion Train Canceled

The New River excursion train in West Virginia has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now known as the Autumn Colors Express, the train had been scheduled to operate over the CSX New River Subdivision between Huntington and Hinton, West Virginia, on Oct. 22-25.

Operator Railexco said that pandemic rules announced by Gov. Jim Justice led to the cancellation.

The same rules also prompted the scrapping of the annual railroad festival in Hinton held at the same time as the excursion.

Railexco said it will seek to operate the train in 2021 between Oct. 21 and 24.

CSX in Warwick and Barberton

Bob Farkas likes to get out when he can to railfan the CSX New Castle Subdivision and photograph its trains.

In the top image, train Q277 passes through Barberton with what appears to be a fairly standard consist.

In the bottom image, a westbound saunters past the former Warwick Tower, which once controlled the crossing of lines of the Baltimore & Ohio and the Pennsylvania railroads.

All of the ex-Pennsy tracks in Warwick are now gone as are the diamonds that once existed here.

Both images were made on July 1, 2019.

On the New Castle Sub Patrol

Robert Farkas sent along three recent images that he made on the CSX New Castle Subdivision in Summit County.

In the top image, westbound intermodal train Q137 is passing through Warwick on May 18. That same day Bob caught an eastbound in Clinton, shown in the middle photograph.

The bottom image was made through the jumper wire on Robinson Avenue in Barberton on May 27. He notes that getting that image was a true surprise.

Plans Set for Annual New River Train

Plans have been announced for the annual New River Train, which will roll on Oct. 21, 22, 28, and 29 between Huntington, West Virginia, and Hinton, West Virginia, through the New River Gorge.

New this year will be a consist of all heritage cars from private owners.

Gone are the Amtrak Amfleet and Horizon  coaches that have characterized the makeup of past trains.

All of the 30 cars on the New River Train will come from private owners. Three Amtrak P42DC locomotives will pull the train.

Some of the passenger cars expected to be in the consist include California Zephyr vista-dome car Silver Solarium, Pullman-built Milwaukee Road Super Dome, Budd-built full-length dome car Summit View, the Overland Trail, a former Southern Pacific barber shop car, and Great Northern full-length dome car Prairie View.

Other cars will include lounge and passenger cars built for the New York Central, Pennsylvania Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio and Central of Georgia Railway

Sponsored by the the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society, the 51st running of the New River Train will travel CSX’s Kanawha and New River subdivisions, both of which are former Chesapeake & Ohio.

The train has a capacity of 1,200 passengers per day and usually sells out by early September. Some heritage coach tickets remain at $179 per person.

Storm Damage has CSX Still Recovering in W.Va.

The flooding from a severe storm that struck CSX hard in West Virginia late last week still had rail operations stymied on Monday.

CSX was particularly hit hard on its former Chesapeake & Ohio mainline between Hinton, West Virginia, and Clifton Forge, Virginia.

CSX logo 1Washouts and debris on the tracks of the Alleghany Subdivision have halted rail traffic in the wake of the storm, which dumped up to 7 inches of rain in some areas.

Trains magazine reported on Monday that much of the track infrastructure near Caldwell, West Virginia, had been washed out.

Similar, although less severe, damage was reported on the New River Subdivision.

A railroad spokesperson said CSX continues to assess the damage and make repairs. Where feasible, traffic has been re-routed around the hard-hit areas.

CSX expected to resume limited operations on Monday. Amtrak’s Chicago-New York Cardinal, which uses the affected tracks, will not resume running over its regular route until Wednesday.

The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad operated its weekend tourist trains and other all attractions.

It had canceled last Friday its Cheat Mountain Salamander train.
