CSX, NS Continue To Whittle Operating Costs

June 10, 2016

The ax continues to fall at Norfolk Southern and CSX as the railroads continue to seek ways to reduce costs in the face of falling traffic, particularly coal traffic.

NS logo 2NS has cut the top speed on several secondary routes although an NS spokesperson did not provide specific when asked by Trains magazine.

The magazine said the maximum speed limit has dropped from 40 to 25 mph in many cases.

By maintaining track to Class 2 Federal Railroad Administration standards, NS will be able to reduce its maintenance costs.

A locomotive shop at Winston Yard will remain open, but 80 jobs have been abolished.

“The Tampa region is a strong revenue generator for CSX, but it is served by multiple yards with a large cost structure. In evaluating the region’s operations, we saw an opportunity to significantly lower costs while continuing to provide safe, reliable service to all of our local customers served by Tampa-area crews,” Chief Operating Officer Cindy Sanborn wrote in an email to employees.

CSX will also cut 39 mechanical and eight engineering positions systemwide.
