Another Alco on the Property at CVSR

May 10, 2021

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad has taken delivery of a “new” Alco locomotive.

CVLX No. 182 is an RS18 that was built in October 1962 for the Canadian National. It was most recently operated by the Delaware Coast Line, which acquired it in 1994.

It arrived at the CVSR Fitzwater shops last week. The CVSR has another RS18 in its fleet, the 1822, which once worked for Canadian Pacific.

The DCL operated a short line in its namesake state but was unable to get its contract renewed in 2018. The Delmarva Central has since begun operating the lines DCL once covered.

The CVLX reporting mark was assigned to the CVSR effective Nov. 25, 2020.

The 182 left Delaware on April 14 and was towed by the Delmarva Central to Clayton, Delaware, for interchange to Norfolk Southern. The 182 was later spotted on NS passing through Warsaw, Indiana.

Although it most recently worked in freight service, the 182 did pull a Toys for Tots train in Delaware on Nov. 4, 2017.

It pulled three tank cars from Lewes to Georgetown on the very last train from Lewes on Dec. 15, 2017.
