One Day in Wellsboro

August 23, 2021

A couple weeks ago I made a trip to Chicago for the weekend. On the way I stopped at Wellsboro, Indiana, and caught the Chesepeake & Indiana switching the local grain elevator.

It so happens that one of the engines was the 818, which was just donated to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum

Also was SD18 813 still in Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range paint. This and another similar unit have been sold to another short line as they have been deemed surplus.

Indiana Museum to Receive 6-Axle Locomotive

August 19, 2021

A former SD9 locomotive is being donated to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum by the Chesapeake & Indiana.

The locomotive is a rebuilt former Elgin, Joliet & Eastern unit that was built in 1959 for the Duluth, Missable & Iron Range as No. 192.

The SD9 was rebuilt by the DM&IR in 1990, with its original 567 prime mover replaced by a 645 engine.

It was given model designation SD-M and roster number. 318. The EJ&E acquired the unit in 1998 and gave it roster number 818.

The C&I plans to continue using the locomotive until it is ready to be delivered to the museum.

C&I this summer deemed the 818 to be surplus. It will be the North Judson, Indiana, museum’s first EJ&E diesel and its first six-axle unit.

B&LE Locomotive Seen in Local Chicago Service

August 15, 2014

In recent years, there were two places you could expect to see locomotives painted in the orange and white livery of the Bessemer & Lake Erie. One was on the former B&LE itself and the other was on the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range, where a handful of B&LE locomotives were sent. Canadian National owns the B&LE and the Missabe Road.

Back in June, a couple of CN units wearing the traditional red, black and white CN livery showed up on the B&LE.

Now, it appears, at least one B&LE unit is working on CN lines in the Chicago area.

CN this week pulled B&LE SD38-2 No. 878 from the storage at Woodcrest Shops – a former Illinois Central facility – near Homewood, Ill., and put it into local service on the former Elgin, Joliet & Eastern.

Reportedly, CN needed motive power. No. 878 is one of eight built by EMD for the B&LE between 1973 and 1976.

“Not in a million years did I see myself chasing a pure B&LE SD38-2 leading a train on the old [Elgin, Joliet & Eastern],” but here we are,” Chicago area railfan Chris Lastovich told Trains magazine. “This was a shot for a record books.”

CN acquired the Bessemer in 2004 with its acquisition of holding company Great Lakes Transportation, a deal which also included the Missabe Range. At least one Messabe range locomotive was used in yard service in Conneaut on the B&LE.
