Pennsy Two for Tuesday

December 20, 2022

Here are a pair of Pennsylvania Railroad images for two for Tuesday. In the top image E7A No. 4212 is in the Penn Central scrap line in East Altoona, Pennsylvania, in 1969 or 1970.

In the bottom image, cabin car No. 477628 was photographed most likely in 1966 or 1967. Amazingly, it still had a Trainphone antenna. There is a good chance that this photo was taken through a car window as we passed the PRR yard in Dennison.

No Passenger Trains to Pull

December 30, 2021

We’re looking around the yard in Lafayette, Indiana, that once was used by the Monon Railroad. Something out of the ordinary to see today is EMD E7A No. 790, which is being stored here. In case you’re wondering how Louisville & Nashville passenger varnish wound up here, the L&N at this time owned the former Monon.

In its early years, Amtrak assigned former L&N E units to its Chicago-Florida South Wind and it passed through Lafayette on the former New York Central for several months until being rerouted in January 1972.

Interestingly, that train, renamed the Floridian in November 1971, would stop in Lafayette on the former Monon between March 1975 and its discontinuance in early October 1979.

A New York Central E7A in Painesville

July 30, 2020

We’re in Painesville along the New York Central — or is is Penn Central now? — sometime in the time frame of 1967 to 1969.

When this image was made, it sure looked like a New York Central scene with EMD E7A No. 4030 leading a train.
