More Opposition Emerges to Pan Am Acquisition by CSX

March 23, 2021

The list of opponents of the CSX acquisition of Pan Am Railways continues to grow.

The latest opponent is the Massachusetts congressional delegation, which wants the U.S. Surface Transportation Board to reject CSX’s argument that the transaction is a minor one.

Instead the Massachusetts delegation wants the STB to subject the deal to more exacting regulatory review process.

“While the STB’s procedures for a significant transaction provide additional time for interested parties to address the impacts of this purchase, and for the STB to reach a decision and impose any necessary conditions, these procedures are still accommodating to CSX,” the state’s two senators and nine members of the House of Representatives told the STB.

“A purchase of this significance must consider the implications for all parties and the impact it will have on local residents.”

In another development, Vermont transportation officials have accused CSX of being “tone deaf” by failing to recognize that some shippers along the Connecticut River in Vermont and New Hampshire will see their rail service reduced from two railroads to one.
