Steam Saturday: NKP 765 Ferry Move Chase

May 13, 2023

In the top image, Norfolk Southern 7051 is leading the ferry movement of Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 to Bellevue where it will then head east on the Wheeling & Lake Erie for another segment of 765’s journey to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad’s Steam in the Valley 2010. Robert Farkas made that photograph and the middle image of the ferry move on the W&LE east of Bellevue.

The bottom image was made by Paul Woodring who was independently chasing the ferry move. Paul’s image was made on the W&LE at Medina where the 765 was making a service stop.

Steam Saturday: NKP 765 in Medina

April 30, 2022

It is Sept. 9, 2010, in Medina on the Wheeling & Lake Erie’s Akron Subdivision. Former Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 is heading east in order to make its first appearance in the Steam in the Valley program of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.

In the images above, the Berkshire-type locomotive is waiting for opposing W&LE traffic to clear.

Crew members are taking advantage of the situation to conduct an inspection of their locomotive.

The top two images are the same with the middle image having been cropped. The third image is closer to the action and shows the crew at work.

Won’t See This Anymore in Medina

September 19, 2019

Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 No. 765 is back in Northeast Ohio but the days of seeing it coming into Akron on the Wheeling & Lake Erie are over.

The W&LE is no longer handling the ferry move of the Lima-built Berkshire locomotive.

But that won’t stop us from cranking up the not so way back machine for a trip to the not too distant past.

Paul Woodring and Bob Farkas were in Medina on Sept. 9, 2010, when this backlit shot of NKP 765 and W&LE SD40 No. 4000 was made.

Now the 765 uses a combination of Norfolk Southern and CSX tracks in Cleveland to reach the CVSR.
