B&O Two for Tuesday

January 3, 2023

It is time for a Baltimore & Ohio two for Tuesday so let’s set the wayback machine and off we go. In the top image, made by Robert Farkas, GP30 No. 6972 is sitting on the point of a train in Clinton on Sept. 21, 1984. The unit was built in December 1962 and later was on the CSX motive power roster.

The bottom image was made by Mike Ondecker and shows F7A No. 4502 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, on Aug. 8, 1968.

Three Railroad Heritage

January 14, 2021

This GP9 represents three railroads. It was built in September 1955 for the Chesapeake & Ohio. It later became Western Maryland 5971. When captured in New Castle, Pennsylvania, on April 16, 1977, it was working for the Chessie System. It would later receive a Chessie System livery. It appears the C&O markings had been painted out and it received a makeshift WM look.

A Pair From New Castle in 1968

April 2, 2020

The late Mike Ondecker often traveled with Bob Farkas on railroad photograph expeditions in the 1960s and 1970s.

However, these photographs were made during a trip Mike made on his own to New Castle, Pennsylvania, in 1968.

In the top image, Pittsburgh & Lake Erie No. 5719 has a bent frame and missing handrail.

It would be sent to Penn Central’s Collinwood diesel shop in Cleveland.

Reportedly it was to be repaired and put back in service. Notice also the big dent in the nose of former New York Central No. 1696.

Striegel Supply Company Alco S-2 No. 9386 is bound for the Striegel scrap yard in Baltimore.

This unit was built for the New York Central in October 1945.

Two Views From New Castle

December 20, 2019

Baltimore & Ohio Alco S-4 No. 9088 is shown at New Castle, Pennsylvania, in February 1973.

The image was scanned from an Agfachrome slide and the faint yellow color seems to be the result of improper processing or early morning sunlight.

The top image was cropped and the full scene is shown in the bottom photograph, which also includes F7A No. 4622.
