What Has Roger Seen Lately? Take a Look

July 18, 2017

Akron Railroad Club member Roger Durfee has been catching up on showing some of his more recent photographs.

He writes that this gallery is nothing too special, just some stuff from around work and nearby locations that he has captured.

The top image was made on one of the rails in the yard. Conrail’s welded rail plant was Lucknow in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

A splash of Kansas City Southern color on train 22K passed the Brookpark yard office when Roger was nearby.

Then there are these two views of LMIX 132, a car billed to Amtrak. Note the gas grill on the one end of the platform.

The Savannah & Atlanta heritage unit on was NS train 310 passing through Sheffield Lake. “[I] did the best I could with the higher summer sun,” Roger wrote.

You never know what you might find, including a restored Lake Shore Electric car in Avon.

Finally, here is the “Blue Mane” DC to AC conversion No. 4004 at Rockport.

‘Family Tree Week’ Continues at Rockport

It was family tree week at Rockport Yard in Cleveland last week with the Pennsylvania ,  Penn Central, Conrail and, of course, NS locomotives making an appearance.

In a previous blog entry we saw the Conrail and the Penn Central H units. In this entry the PRR is featured at Rockport.

This colorful duo was power off the 11J that was heading for the Knob to spin. The PRR would be cut away after the turn and added to an eastbound as its cab signal leader.

The 7239 would then take the 11J solo to Fairlane Yard. I was happy to catch the ex-Union Pacific big EMD with a clean nose. These units are usually coupled to NS units due to the ex-UP units not being cab signal equipped.

Ten new GE GEVOs on heavy duty flat cars that are en route to CLN in Mozambique were at Rockport Yard this week. It’s always an impressive sight to see a string of new units like this. Here are several views of the CLN units plus one with a local shoving platform and one with a United Airlines flight above that is landing at nearby Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

I was able to see these two new GE’s for Colas Rail at Rockport Yard in Cleveland. I believe Colas provides rail service in the United Kingdom. The locomotives are built at the GE Transportation assembly plant in Erie, Pa., and shipped on flatcars for export. They sat in Rockport over the weekend.

Just Passing Through

March 26, 2014

This past Sunday morning I was just about to leave home to go listen to the mighty Wurlitzer organ at the Loran Palace when the phone rang.

It was Dennis Taksar advising me a of  a colorful visitor resting at Rockport Yard.

I adjusted my routing to make a pass along the yard and an all-so-brief stop to get a shot of a pair of GE export engines on flat cars that had arrived from Erie on Friday afternoon to be handed off to an eastbound train and an eventual overseas destination.

Sorry, but I don’t recall where their new home will be.

Todd Dillon got an early start to railfanning on the Labor Day weekend by getting out in Cleveland on Friday afternoon. Here is a sample of what he captured.
